Gates Chili elementary schools win USDA award
Gates Chili Central School District has once again earned the HealthierUS School Challenge Award. This award program, established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, recognizes schools creating healthier school environments through their promotion of good nutrition and physical activity.
The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) establishes rigorous criteria for schools’ food quality, participation in meal programs, physical activity opportunities and nutrition education–the key components that make for healthy and active kids. Schools that are doing the very best work to keep kids healthy are recognized, and high-achieving schools even receive monetary incentives. As part of this award, each elementary school received $500 towards their school nutrition program.
School Nutrition Director Deborah Beauvais presented plaques at the Oct. 8 Board of Education meeting. School Nutrition Coordinator Marisa Bellanca and School Nutrition team members Georgie Irons (Neil Armstrong), Obie Burden (Paul Road), Andrea Wheatley (Florence Brasser), Martha Fantauzzo (Walt Disney) accepted the awards on behalf of each elementary school.
